Situation

The operating problem

The design question was straightforward: how could a field operator move from several categories of machine-generated safety signals into one reviewable incident workflow without treating an alert as the final decision?

What shaped the work

  • The prototype uses synthetic records and sample media rather than a live site, camera, sensor network, or client data.
  • PPE, fire and smoke, methane, vehicle, and zone events may carry very different source quality, latency, operating context, and escalation requirements.
  • A generated signal can support review, but an accountable person and a site-specific process still own the response.
  • The interface needed to preserve source, location, time, severity, and status without exposing private operations or worker data.

How the work moved

Digital Meld organized the prototype around the operator's path from overview to evidence and incident handling. The interface groups signals by operating category, preserves source and location context, exposes status and severity, and keeps human review visible instead of presenting AI output as an autonomous safety decision.

Start with the incident handoff

The design centers the action an operator must take after a signal appears: inspect the category, locate the source, review the incident record, and decide what requires follow-up. Model output is supporting context, not the workflow owner.

Separate operating categories

PPE, fire and smoke, methane, and zone security have distinct overview and drill-down paths. The grouping prevents unlike signals from becoming one undifferentiated alert stream.

Keep source context close

The prototype carries location, source, time, severity, status, imagery, and incident details into category views so the operator can inspect why an item is present before acting.

Make the prototype boundary visible

The screenshots use synthetic records and sample media. They support interface and workflow decisions, not claims about detector quality, live integrations, or safety performance.

Why this path

Center the operator's incident workflow

A field-safety interface is useful only when a person can move from a signal to source context, review, status, and a site-specific next action. A detection label by itself is not an operating process.

Keep categories distinct before aggregation

PPE, gas, fire, vehicle, and zone events carry different evidence and escalation requirements. Category views preserve those boundaries while the overview gives one entry point.

Use synthetic data for public inspection

A reviewable public prototype can demonstrate interface and workflow decisions without exposing worker identities, customer sites, private camera feeds, credentials, or incident history.

State what the prototype cannot prove

A demo can support product and workflow design claims. It cannot support claims about live integration, detector quality, alert latency, adoption, safety performance, or business value without production evidence.
